About Us

Talon Pharmacy is an independent full service compounding pharmacy that has been in operation since 2002 in the north central part of San Antonio, TX. Throughout the years, Talon has served the needs of physicians, patients and animals in our community and all over the country.

In March of 2009, the pharmacy experienced a devastating fire which caused a temporary relocation. The rebuilding process took 7 months to complete. Through the strength and determination of the Talon Team, the pharmacy had started dispensing prescriptions on a limited scale just one week after the fire. After being displaced for many months, Talon Compounding Pharmacy had a successful re-grand opening on September 30th, 2009!

Today, Talon has a new facility in the front part of the Oak Centre complex on Thousand Oaks Drive that is in full operation with new products and services! We are proud to announce that we are one of the few pharmacies in San Antonio that is certified to compound sterile products. Talon launched $7.50 Prescription Savings Program for generic retail drugs in November of 2009 and reinstated the Rx Rewards Program shortly after. The pharmacy is growing by leaps and bounds and it is due to the incredible support of our family of patients and physicians.

Talon Pharmacy does business nationally, so our business is not heavily dependent on location as it is dependent on providing personalized customer service. We believe it is the service we provide that separates us from our competition. It has earned us the respect of our customers and it is, in essence, the reason they keep coming back month after month and year after year.

What is Compounding?

The science of compounding is an ageless art that combines the latest medical knowledge with state-of-the-art technology together to customize medications. Compounding is the foundation of the pharmacy profession and at one time, was the standard means of providing prescription medications before pharmaceuticals were produced in mass quantities by manufacturers. Our team of professionals have each received specialized training in the art and science of compounding that enables them to prepare customized medications from scratch. These medications are designed to meet the unique needs of the patient and or the physician.

Compounding pharmacists focus on providing innovative care that can call for a variety of different services such as changing the delivery system of a medication, preparing the prescription dye-free, sugar-free, or preservative free, compounding an eye drop in a sterile compounding lab, preparing flavored medications for veterinarians, providing personalized hormone therapy and custom-tailoring medication not commercially available. Compounders are known as the problem solvers of the industry.

The demand for professional compounding has increased as healthcare professionals and patients realize that the limited number of strengths and dosage forms that are commercially available do not meet the needs of many patients, and that these patients often have a better response to a customized dosage form that is "just what the doctor ordered".

Customized, compounded medications are a vital part of quality medical care because the needs of patients are different. The needs of a patient needs are determined by a physician, who chooses a treatment regimen that may include a compounded medication. Physicians often prescribe compounded medications for reasons that include (but are not limited to) the following situations:

Benefits of Compounding

There are numerous benefits to compounding. Compounding a medication can be as simple as flavoring a medication or as complex as changing the delivery system of a medication from a tablet to a cream. One of the greatest benefits of compounding is that it allows the physician to respond to each person’s uniqueness in an individualized way. Physicians who prescribe compounds expand their treatment options by having access to new routes of administration, dosage strengths, customized pharmaceutical combinations, and by having the ability to develop new and potentially helpful compounds. Our pharmacy can help you with medications that are in short supply/back ordered, discontinued, unique or otherwise commercially unavailable and help you avoid interruption in patient care.

When is Compounding Nescessary?

•Medication needed in a strength that is not commercially available.
Unique dosage forms containing the best dose of medication for each individual can be compounded.
•Medications in dosage forms that are not commercially available, such as transdermal gels, troches and "chewies".
•Medication that contain preservatives, dyes and other potential allergens or sugar.
•Medications can be compounded to eliminate problem-causing agents such as dyes, sugar, lactose, or alcohol.
•Combinations of various compatible medications into a single dosage form for easier administration and improved compliance.
•Medications that are no longer commercially available, short listed, back ordered, discontinued or otherwise unavailable.
•Medications that provide a greater benefit from being combined.
•Medications that need to be flavored to be more tolerable.
•Medications that require the usual route of administration to be altered.

Clean Room Letter of Achievement

Talon Compounding

July 5, 2010

Dear Will Shepard,

I wanted to take a moment and tell you about my experience the last time I was in to perform the service on your cleanroom. It is evident that the staff you employ is dedicated to their profession from the time I walked in the door until the time I left. I’m not a customer, but a vendor, and if you treat your patients like you treat me I would say your patients are in great hands.

Everyone treats me as if they’ve known me for many years. I feel like I am very much a part of the group. The enthusiasm and professionalism shown by your employees is contagious and one cannot help but feel the overwhelming need to exceed their own expectations once they’ve been infected by the considerate and sensitive nature they exude.

The same is true when you enter the cleanroom. Not an overly large cleanroom, but spaces are maintained well and that helps reduce particles and does not restrict airflows. Everything is tidy and makes for an open and inviting place to work. The cleanroom is remarkably clean with the amount of materials you keep in there, which is likely due to the importance, the attitude and the dedication to maintain a particle free, sterile environment by the cleanroom personnel.

It is evident that what you are doing works and it shows from the moment you walk through the front door. Keep up the fabulous work that you all do.

Best Regards, Gregg Roszkowski
